In this article, we introduce you to the mission and actions of the Zero Waste Belgium association, created to reduce waste production. We’ll also explain why recycling alone is far from sufficient when it comes to true eco-responsibility. Believe us, the oceans will thank you!
The birth of the association…
It all began in 2015, when a small group of zero waste and anti-overconsumption enthusiasts decided to create the Zero Waste Belgium association. Together, they started organizing workshops to raise awareness about the short-, medium-, and long-term dangers of waste.
They quickly noticed that institutions and businesses were not acting strongly enough in favor of the environment and particularly waste reduction. They also highlighted that recycling, although well developed in Belgium, was far from a sufficient solution.
As Pauline Talbot, a member of the association, explained to La Première: “Materials end up scattered […], so obviously we can only recycle what we can collect”, giving the example of a single aluminum can.

What you might not know about recycling
Recycling often seems like a good solution for the planet. Yet it is also a contradictory process, since it generates greenhouse gas emissions during collection, transportation, and processing. Recycling consumes a lot of energy and contributes to global pollution.
In addition, many waste streams – particularly plastics – are not 100% recyclable. This means recycling almost always involves a loss of material. Worse still, many plastics are not designed to be recycled even once.
For example, one-third of all plastic produced is used for single-use packaging, such as household food wrappers. Most of this waste is not recyclable at all and often ends up in nature, where it is anything but biodegradable.
This shows why recycling alone cannot achieve true zero waste across all materials, resources, and components. Despite the progress made worldwide, there is still a long road ahead to reach genuine zero waste practices.
The commitments of Zero Waste Belgium
Fortunately, Zero Waste Belgium — a partner of BulkBar — is here to help find alternatives to waste. The association’s mission is to raise awareness and support all members of society in taking the step toward zero waste and waste reduction.
Zero Waste Belgium works with a wide range of audiences: young people, individuals, public institutions, and businesses. Their initiatives often include small themed workshops (for example, on zero waste), fun activities for children, and seminars for companies. Everyone can act at their own level.

How you can get involved
If, like us, you are convinced by the projects and campaigns of Zero Waste Belgium, there are many ways to help:
– Join the team as a volunteer and play an active role on the front line of the organization’s actions.
– Make a donation to support their projects (click here to donate).
– Spread the word about zero waste principles in your community.

And remember: the best way to reduce waste is not to create it in the first place!
